ON MARCH 26TH THE VOLUNTEER PRESIDENT RECEIVED A LETTER FROM THE OFFICE OF THE FIRE CHIEF ADVISING US TO SEND A
REPRESENTATIVE TO A MEETING ABOUT THE PLANNING OF OUR "NEW STATION" SOMETHING WE OPPOSE AND WERE KEPT IN THE
DARK ABOUT FROM 2006 UNTIL THE ARRIVAL OF THE LETTER, AND NOW WE ARE BEING FORCED TO MOVE.  THE LETTER BELOW IS
BEING SENT OUT TO THE CITIZENS OF BRANDYWINE AT AS MANY FUNCTIONS AS WE CAN ATTEND
STATING OUR OPPOSITION TO THIS MOVE

WHILE WE DO OPPOSE THE MOVE OF THE STATION, THE OFFICERS AND MEMBERS OF THE VOLUNTEER FIRE DEPARTMENT OF
BRANDYWINE WANT TO MAKE IT VERY CLEAR THAT THIS PROJECT STARTED WELL BEFORE THE ARRIVAL OF ACTING FIRE CHIEF
EUGENE JONES, AND THAT CHIEF JONES HAS MET WITH US AND CONTINUES TO WORK WITH US ON THE NEW STATION AND THE
ISSUES OF CONCERN THAT WE HAVE.  OUR THANKS TO ACTING CHIEF EUGENE JONES FOR HIS AVAILABILITY TO MEET WITH US AND
WORK WITH US.

IF YOU AGREE WITH US PLEASE HELP BY CONTACTING YOUR LOCAL, AND STATE REPRESENTATIVES
TO STOP THIS MOVE AND WASTE OF TAXPAYER DOLLARS

Dear Citizens of Brandywine and surrounding areas:

For over 50 years, the Volunteer Fire Department of Brandywine has served our community, neighbors, and the general public.  Now, we need
your help!  Please join us in opposing the plan to build a new Brandywine Fire Station.

Recently the Prince George’s County Fire/EMS Department informed the Volunteer Fire Department of Brandywine, Inc. that they were to appoint a
representative to participate in a design team responsible for planning a new fire station to be located on a small 2 acre parcel of land at 13809
Brandywine Road, across from Gwynn Park High School.  We were advised on March 26th that a land deal was closed on March 20th.  How did this
happen while the county threatens furloughs, closings, and layoff of firefighters?  Everyone should be asking “How does the county have over
$441,000 to purchase land, but no money to keep our firefighters?”  The property was acquired without contacting the volunteer fire department
prior to the purchase.  Our only notification was a phone call received more than two years ago advising that the county was moving forward with a
search to acquire land for a new fire station in the Brandywine Road – Dyson Road area.

Numerous times the Volunteers of Brandywine have attempted to work with the Fire/EMS Department on a remodel of the current station.  We even
offered to donate land across from the existing station to build a new one.  However, an agreement could not be reached because the County
Fire/EMS department would only proceed if volunteer authority was removed.  Then on March 26, 2009 a letter was delivered from Acting Fire
Chief Eugene Jones advising us to appoint a representative for a meeting April 14th at the architect’s office to be a part of planning the new
station.  NO discussion about land acquisition, NO appealing the location, NO input from the volunteers, and NO consideration of remodeling the
current station had been afforded the volunteers.

In February 2006, the Brandywine Volunteers had requested renovations to our station and funding was initially listed in the Capital Improvement
Program.  However, the $750,000 disappeared without explanation. Current estimates for renovation are between 2 and 3 million dollars.  The cost
of a new station, excluding land, permits, and surveying, is 4 million dollars OR MORE!  Which is a better choice?  The new station is opposed by
the Prince George’s County Fire Commission, the Prince Georges County Volunteer Fire and Rescue Association, and Acting Fire Chief Eugene
Jones has stated he would favor renovation to save money during these tough economic times.  However, the County continues with the project.
The Volunteer Fire Department of Brandywine is adamantly opposed to this plan for a new station.  Plans for a new station do not include a hall.
The new station is a duplicate rigid plan of other stations with no changes available to keep the volunteer fire department the hub of the
community.  The existing hall is available to the community and our source of income for the purchase of tools, equipment, and other expenses.
We would no longer have a facility available for our annual Breakfast with Santa and Sparky® where we teach fire safety to local children.
Additionally, this means the church that uses our hall, and the Senior Citizens who meet regularly would be EVICTED.  The hall would no longer be
available to civic groups, scouting groups, the community and visitors for meetings, receptions, parties, wakes and other functions.  Long term, the
revenue loss, falls back on the community to with the largest expense, replacing fire apparatus.  New apparatus starting price $500,000.

This community has supported the Brandywine Volunteers for over 50 years and we are asking you to help us NOW!  Please join us in the fight
against this move to a new station by contacting your local and State Representatives.  Tell them you oppose the move of the Volunteer Fire
Department of Brandywine, and you oppose the cost of constructing a new station.  We have enclosed a list of the local representatives.  Please
contact them and help us in our plight.  Thank you for supporting our efforts to save, serve and protect our community.

Sincerely,
The Officers and Members of the
Volunteer Fire Department of Brandywine, Inc.
